　　at the end of the street

8 s2 @9 v" G* H2 c' M　　an eastern star set like a pearl atop a steeple
( t* T3 u8 f$ q) q& l% }　　that shadows the doorway
) t8 y# ~/ c) F$ ?6 r! X, }* w　　where the one-armed card shark squats
, T( k# c/ T2 D. Q) R& O　　shuffling his deck on a milk crate
, Z/ e: B8 N3 x  r) J1 ^　　waiting for the No. 6 bus to discharge
　　the off-duty cop the seamstress
　　the drunken mechanic and the clerk on crutches
　　who pauses before his building to watch
# S7 F  J. t+ M: u1 f) L$ `" k& f* P　　the mechanic lose three dollars at blackjack
　　and then stiffly ascends the five flights
　　to his two rooms on a shaftway
　　hanging his coat on a hook
" v; U- N2 j" |8 y) P0 @7 l* o　　and sitting down at the table
　　on which this morning he placed
8 x# Y  ?* y2 M! \0 ^4 u　　a soup bowl and spoon
　　a tin of crackers and the crossword
+ r+ p% e& q8 l/ J　　puzzle he had been laboring over
　　beneath the gaze of his late wife
　　her color photograph propped up in a small frame
. |; G! m' G+ J( m3 J$ u# Y　　a young woman in a boxy dress and felt cap
- e. v* X# R8 {8 b; }* J　　waving shyly by the edge of a lake
. [2 U9 ]9 {+ w2 C; ?1 j* z2 U  W% s' h　　where over her shoulder beneath a clear sky
/ P- ~6 V) T% w) c. C( B　　a sailboat rides the wind
0 Z0 U/ B" H! t6 w/ r3 V- h　　passengers on the polished deck
　　gazing at the glowing mountain peaks
　　the cypresses lining the shore
　　and the pink palazzi with ancient gardens
$ i& ~$ h9 G, H" R1 C( W　　these men and women in white
　　who seem to live upon the water
: B# Z; z1 p+ Z  _0 O! _! {　　gliding among themselves oblivious to strife
) B( n) Y/ n( k8 Z) g　　and all else that wears a body down
　　some sipping from crystal goblets
